At CSG we're sometimes called upon to work within tight confines. This project was one of them: a long, narrow covered balcony measuring 7' x 55' in Chicago's West Town neighborhood. In such conditions design is critical, and every element must be sized properly and work together.
We began by breaking up the long space into smaller spaces visually by changing up the decking materials. We mixed Brazilian ipê wood with concrete pavers to add interest and create blocks of space. We enclosed the long corridor on each end with either shrubs or vines, and introduced verticality through upright grasses in narrow containers. Boldly colored furniture and in-deck lights add an ultra sophisticated feel to the balcony. Drip irrigation solves the problem of natural rainfall not reaching the plantings.
The result? A slim, trim sliver of fun for our client.
